Traditional Tattoo Font
About Traditional Tattoo Font
Although tattoos have been around for thousands of years, many people still associate them with the seedy underbelly of society. But the ink art on the body is no longer just for sailors, criminals, and rebellious teenagers. In fact, you can question that where would the creative art world be without the influence of tattoos? Tattooing has become big business in the art world, showcasing some of the best talents in today's art scene.
Tattoos have been a part of many cultures over the centuries. From being traditionally a symbol of initiation rites, this body art has come to represent personal messages and expressions for some people. They are not only a way to express oneself but also a symbol of uniqueness among the population.
Tattoo fonts have a sacred history in the tattoo world. They are a way to personalize a tattoo, with a font that revokes something memorable in the wearer's life. In recent years, many have been deciding to go back to traditional tattoo fonts instead of newer or more popular ones. In a world that is constantly changing, it may seem as if this is a sign of the times.
Newer tattoo fonts often incorporate bold lines and shapes that can often be overwhelming to some people. Traditional tattoos are often more delicate and thematic that may appeal to those who like the idea of an understated font more than bold, dramatic takes on font design.
Designer Biroakakarati, a self-proclaimed "avid tattoo enthusiast" set out to create a traditional font for tattooing that would combine the classic sailor feel with a more modern design. He created what he calls "Traditional Tattoo" font, which is an all-caps font.
The idea behind this font was to create a typeface that will stand out on the skin, but also balance form and function. The font did not take much time to become popular and has been downloaded thousands of times. They are perfect for tattoo artists but can be used for anything that needs to be written in a bold style.
The traditional tattoo font can trace its roots back to sailors who needed a way to label their ships. The old-style is derived from Roman inscriptional lettering and was specifically developed for signage at sea. The letters feature decorative serifs with wavy arms, like those found on old sailing charts. These distinctive features make the letters stand out on a design and tattoo work.
The typeface is available for free download. However, you have to donate to the artist to get the rights for using it for commercial purposes.
